Thimbleweed Park 2 dev blog

Aug 1, 2026

Welcome to the all new Thimbleweed Park 2 dev blog.

The response to our announcement has been overwhelming. Thanks so much for your enthusiasm. It keeps us going.

We hope to post at least once a week with all the happenings but no spoilers.

We’d like to get the podcast going again, but no promises. It was a lot of work each week.

I’ll post updates on Mastodon or you can use RSS like it’s 2004 or you can hit refresh obsessively.

We’d like to do Big Box versions, but we’re a long way from making any decisions.

The game will be on Steam and GOG for Mac, Windows and Linux. It will also be on Switch, Xbox and PlayStation.

iOS and Android are hard because premium (paid) games don’t do well unless we can get into Apple Arcade or Google Play Pass and being included in those is largely not up to us.

We’re not doing a Kickstarter as the game is already funded, but we would like to figure out ways to do fun things like the phonebook and other goodies.

Please don’t suggest we put it on retro platforms because while the game is pixel art it uses shaders, FMOD and other modern tech.

It will be translated into EFIGS and a few other languages. Only English is planned for voice recording.

Not happy with the colors on the dev blog, open to suggestions, but I’m stubborn.

– Ron

First comment?? So excited this all is happening, and looking forward to sharing this game with everyone. I too have been overwhelmed (in a good way) with all the love and support about this game. We feel you!
JiFish Aug 01, 2026
Can I suggest that if you don't need to raise money for development, but still want to do goodies, you could maybe raise money for a charity instead? Could prevent you from getting too inundated and help and help a cause.

Unpopular opinion: Do an easy and a hard mode. Or just ditch the hard mode ;-).
chris Aug 01, 2026
i think it’d be interesting to hear how you think about puzzle dependencies. do you set up abstract dependencies first and then work up individual puzzles or vice versa. etc etc.

The ending of Thimbleweed Park 2 was revealed to me in a dream. (Un)fortunately I don't remember it anymore.
Allan Aug 01, 2026
The podcast was fantastic so hope you'll find the time :)
Ian Malcolm Aug 01, 2026
With most game announcements that might be in my wheelhouse my reaction is usually “Oh, I’ll have to remember to check that out…” but with this I swear I did a double take at the original Masto post then started grinning like an absolute loon, and am willing it to be 2028 already…

So stoked you’re doing a Mac version, and I’ll probably double-dip on Switch when the time comes, since it looks like iOS (my prev. second format)is unlikely.

Also great to see so many of the original team returning!

WOW! The dev blog is BACK! Yeeeeehaaaaaa! Im so glad that mr. Gilbert and Co once again come together to produce a piece of art! Thimbleweed park is one of my favourite games! Ransome the bipping clown is my favourite character (and btw Im the winner of the free copy of TWP for my oil painting. That was on twitter long time ago but that copy is still on my GOG account!). Well, we are looking for this game! Thank you for my happy childhood! (and for my happy youth, and middle crisis time too :)))

The blog colors are nice, but if you want to maintain continuity with the old Thimbleweed Park, you can reuse the forum colors:

OMG OMG OMG THE BLOG!
It's like it's 2016 once again!
Zak Phoenix McKracken™ Aug 01, 2026
Furthermore, the forum never died; with this news, it's already reawakened and more alive than ever! I'm sure it's a good idea to use it, when possible, for updates on TWP 2 and to get feedback from us Users of Low Moral Fiber.

Any plans for a Switch 2 port, to take advantage of the JoyCon 2's mouse mode?

Also, any chance of including the Delores game into TB2 as a bonus for console players who weren't able to play it?
Ron Gilbert Aug 01, 2026
any chance of including the Delores game into TB2
Yes, we are planning on that.
Sergio Ferraz Jr Aug 01, 2026
Thanks a lot Ron, can't wait to play both of them.
Thanius Aug 01, 2026
I'm so psyched, one of the best adventure games this side of SOMI

Here we are again, day one.

If you’re planning to do a dutch translation, please drop me a comment. For more than 15 years I’ve provided faithful, creative adaptations for a lot of shows from Disney, Nickelodeon, Cartoon Network and others and am a big fan of your work.
peterszky Aug 01, 2026
Thanks for the dev blog, I really enjoyed it during the development of Thimbleweed Park 1.
Victor Van Halen Aug 01, 2026
Curious about the "No AI" statement at the top. I get it that for creative endeavors, that's a hard pass, but you don't expect to use it even for mundane tasks or chasing that pesky bug here and there?

As a fellow developer, I find it to be a great accelerator and a good resource for prototype and cycling through ideas without wasting a lot of time. I'm genuinely curious about your team's philosophy on that, and of course totally respect different opinions on the subject!

Looking forward to following this blog, just as I did 10 years ago! Family size has increased but I'll find a way to keep up 💙
Sven Aug 01, 2026
I feel like that 16-year-old-me again when discovering that my favorite game gets a sequel and I just can't wait to get it and I already feel the excitement. Thank you guys and the team for making this possible!
Michael Fessenden Aug 01, 2026
Thank you for doing another blog, I loved reading about the technical aspects of development the last time.

Was that really ten years ago already??
Raf Aug 01, 2026
Is Polish language planned?
Gins Aug 01, 2026
I can't believe that Thimbleweed Park is old enough to be nostalgic for it already 😢

Looking forward to read the progress again.
seguso Aug 01, 2026
I emerge from my cryogenic sleep to say this:

I would love it if we could walk around with two characters, meaning one actually follows you, rather than having to switch between them while the other just stands there rooted to the spot.

I hope that right from the start, you'll pay attention to greetings and flickering lights, or anything that makes the world feel more real.

And no, having a storyline that says the world is not real does not help with that. ;)
Andread Aug 01, 2026
I'm soooo ready again! Bring it on guys, good luck with the project and looking forward to reading all of the dev aspects you're willing to share!
dani Aug 01, 2026
I caaaan't believe: its thimbleweed park season once again!

Don't want to give you guys more work, but the podcast was really awesome last time.

I also love the whole meta-gaming-universe that also dialogues with monkey island in certain way! keep weird, love you ron!
hop Aug 01, 2026
Can't wait to hear about the tech you are using for this one. Are you picking up where you left off with the original game / Delores?
Octavi Navarro Aug 01, 2026
Hi everyone! Glad to be back! I'm so excited about this, exactly like I was on my first day working on TWP1, 10 years (gasp!) ago.
With Ron, Gary, David and Mark at the helm, I expect spending a lot of time working on vomiting animations, exploding hamsters and Ransome torturing mimes. I can't wait!
oo00fx00oo Aug 01, 2026
Hello that's really great news! I've loved everything about the first game and still I find myself thinking about Mark Ferrari's astounding work on the backgrounds. The big scrolling room that moves from the road lighting of the shop all through the view over the city is something unique really. Are you planning to reuse artwork from the first one or you are making everything from scratch?
Disk 114 Aug 01, 2026
I’m excited.
Dee Cooke-Rees Aug 01, 2026
Can't wait to play this, but reading all the updates will be a real treat in the meantime!

Still excited!

Ron Gilbert (and the team) producing a new adventure game is always incredible news. I’m so happy about it. And I’m still feeling a little worried that this might be a hoax, but I think that, at this point, it would be very cruel.

And, to be honest, I’m having mixed feelings about the dev blog and the (possible) podcast. I’d love to be playing the game right now, and I can’t wait for the release date, so I’ll probably end up reading and listening to everything about the game. But, in a way, it will all be spoilers. And I’d really like to play the game knowing as little about it as possible.

So, that’s my dilemma.
Patrik Spacek Aug 01, 2026
I translated TWP1 to Czech language, same as all other LucasArts adventure games, let me know.
Podcast can happen once a month, no pressure.
If you make another weird bizzare world for pixel art game like TWP1 Wireframe world or Sam&Max Virtual Reality world, let me know, I will connect w Mark and do it for ya.
I am happy, you are back!
Pouyan Aug 01, 2026
I'm just so happy, so much that i can't express.
I didn't find out about TWP till it released, and later i found about all the blog posts, podcasts etc.
So i always kinda had that regret that i wasn't there when all those things happened. NOW I HAVE A SECOND CHANCE! AND I'M SO FKNG EXCITED!
THATSPLUMS Aug 01, 2026
Happy with everything you've said Ron! Please don't pander to everyone, do the game you want to do and release how you want :)
I'd love a big box, so keeping fingers crossed!!
Loved the first, and Delores game, so can't wait for TP2!
Tobi Aug 01, 2026
Wow, I am so excited. Thanks for all the adventures you did :-) They are all so much fun :-) Keep Up the good Work :-) (this Text is Not ai generated :-))

Let's goooooooooooooo! I could never have expected this.
I enjoy many things in the virtual world but I cannot say that what I experience is "happiness"; it's just "enjoyment". However, this kind of news bring me true happiness, similar to how it did with TWP1, RTMI and back in the days when I played MM, MI1 and MI2.
Agent Guybrush Aug 02, 2026
Please release for iPad as a premium game. I’d rather own than subscribe to Apple Arcade. Thanks!
Agent Thiezn Aug 02, 2026
Yesss incredible news!

Really loved the game, but the podcast and insights in how it was developed especially was a unique treat! I have been searching for the old podcast episodes but it seems they have all disappeared from the normal channels like SoundCloud and Apple Podcasts.

Is there any chance they are still on some harddisk somewhere and could re-upload somewhere?
Livio Cherubini Aug 02, 2026
Hi Ron, and hi to the whole team. I’m absolutely thrilled by this news. Fantastic news. I loved TWP very much in 2017, just as I’ve loved all your MI games, and I’m absolutely certain that TWP2 will be a huge success, too. You’re an amazing team. You’re all so talented. I can’t wait to play this wonderful adventure game as well. Thank you very much to all of you. Thank you for existing.

masayume Aug 02, 2026
Thank you for making another game ! There will never be enough Ron Gilbert Games, ever.
It would be interesting if you let us know how you plan to venture out of your "comfort zone" this time.
Sushi Aug 02, 2026
Is there any chance they are still on some harddisk somewhere and could re-upload somewhere?
Search the TWP forum (category podcasts > the future is uncertain) where we’ve realised the same thing last year and made sure all episodes are safely stored (until someone cleans up their google drive that is)
Robby Aug 02, 2026
Hi master, The story will be new or directly sequel ?
Elena Hitomi Aug 02, 2026
I knew there was gonna be a part 2 woohoo I can’t wait to play it. I wanna play it with my son, too lol but zi suppose there might be some non-age-appropriate scenes but then again I could just cover his eyes (anyway Im blabbing) congrats! Seriously!
march Aug 02, 2026
Maniac Mansion, Monkey Island, and of course Thimbleweed Park. That feeling when Ron Gilbert suddenly pulls Thimbleweed Park 2 out of nowhere is just like the old days - a little time‑warp straight back into the golden era of adventure games.
A physical release would be amazing - any plans to offer boxed versions? Linux and Switch would be fantastic options. Perhaps including the first games extras bonuses.
Nathan Aug 02, 2026
I swear I just had a feeling I should check out grumpygamer a day before the July 30th post. If it weren't for another site it might have been another couple of months before I realized I was too early!

There is just nothing like a Ron Gilbert lead adventure game. How lucky we are to have another one on the way!

Plus, I learned so much during the last dev blog. Thank you!
BeleG Aug 02, 2026
Just one more comment to ensure you remain overwhelmed! Excited to follow you all in this new adventure. I've listened to the TWP1 podcast three times over the years, can't wait to hear from you again (let alone play the game!).
YeaMan Aug 02, 2026
I am so so happy about this. For whatever reason I didn’t play TWP until like 2025, so it is very luxurious to only have to wait 3 years haha.
YeaMan Aug 02, 2026
Also, it would be nice to see merch etc. I know you already have the game funded which is great but it would be fun to support it somehow.
Also I would like a shirt, haha.
Green Tentacle Aug 02, 2026
"I want to be a rock star, but I need a break." Errr... ahhhh... this is terrific news. Like many fans of your games I would look forward to a big box of some form... with any physical media (CD, DVD, USB Key). Let's show Sony and others that physical media still matters. Have no issues paying extra to the publisher and artists!

Wishing you the best with your development! I can't wait to play the game.
Sergio Aug 02, 2026
That’s fantastic news! That said, judging by the comments I’ve read, I find it hard to believe how many people didn’t appreciate the ending of Thimbleweed Park. For me, that meta-narrative ending was the most beautiful and touching gift imaginable for fans of great old-school graphic adventures, just like the entire game. But perhaps i’m just too old and sentimental. I hope you manage to pull it off again.
Tim Aug 02, 2026
Hi Ron, I'm absolutely buzzing after seeing the news. I really loved the first Thimbleweed Park but I did not expect for it to get a sequel. Hope you'll enjoy making it and I can't wait to play. Cheers!
Yannick Aug 02, 2026
Very good news! Will it be a new or different game engine, or an improved version of the one for Thimbleweed Park or Delores (Dinky, Wimpy, etc.) ?
Frank Bear Aug 02, 2026
Yay!
Purple Tentacle Aug 02, 2026
How about a cameo?
Johan Windh Aug 03, 2026
So happy this is happening!
Thomas Aug 03, 2026
I hope you find time for doing the podcast, I enjoyed it very much the last time. Looking forward to reading the blog regardless.
Guru Aug 03, 2026
So glad of the anti AI stance. I dont understand why people are so for putting less care into games. The only reason I can think is they do not want to actually think about the moral impact of their own use.
Part of the reason I like older games is because the craft of the devs shines through.
Rubber chicken with pulley in the middle Aug 03, 2026
Fantastic news!
This might be my second favorite Thimbleweed game! :D
Ransomes Jokebook Aug 03, 2026
I am so happy! Will buy it in early sale the moment it is available.
Ping Aug 03, 2026
I love to see you still making games and also being firmly against using AI in art.
I love your games and can't wait for the release of this one!
Brian G Aug 03, 2026
The only issue I have is that I have to wait 2 years for it!!!

Looking forward to the game so much. I loved the house that Delores lives in, it reminded me of Maniac Mansion and I thought that was a cool parallel to the early games. Would be really cool if the house featured more in the new game. 😏
Martijn van Eeten Aug 03, 2026
You say "while the game is pixel art it uses shaders, FMOD and other modern tech". Does this mean it's going to run on a different engine than the first Thimbleweed Park? Because that can be run using Scummvm...
Ron Gilbert Aug 03, 2026
It is the same engine on RtMI. It's a very different engine than TWP1.
uriel Aug 04, 2026
wow, just wow. over the moon with the news. TWP is by far my favorite game post-childhood/teenager era.

Please consider setting up something/anything for some us to help you fund the dev blog, podcast, in-game stuff, etc. I'd love to 'subscribe' during the next couple of years and get some type content in return.
MichaelSon Aug 04, 2026
So, no Amiga version this time? In 32 colors TW2 wouldn’t look altoo bad. Although I must admit, there won’t be enough space in the big box for all the discs.
Oh well, PC/Mac big box and GOG version will do it for me then.
BigRedButton Aug 04, 2026
Great news!
The dev blog is bookmarked now.
Sean Aug 04, 2026
I'd be interested to know more about the technical differences between the game engine for TWP1 and Return to Monkey Island / TWP2!
8bitKittyKat Aug 04, 2026
In regards to the blog colors.. the blog for TWP1 was cool color tones.. what if the blog for TWP2 leaned more into warm color tones? Just a thought. :)
Johan Windh Aug 04, 2026
I'd also love to have a new podcast. Been listening to the old one twice!
MDY Aug 04, 2026
Yay! The signals! They’re strong! :)
Bruno Aug 04, 2026
I´m introducing adventure games to my daughter as a way of learning english. Last week she began to play Monkey Island 1, I think that by 2028 she will be able to play (and understand) TP 2 by herself (she´s 10).
Andreas Aug 04, 2026
I'm so hyped! Hopefully it's still a retro interface. I think with RTMI a lot of the excitement of playing got lost on the player when the player was denied to try various fun stuff, instead of being able to try pretty much everything you'd could think of. Like in TP, DOTT (i tried to blow up the Pizza Van). That's what makes old p&c so much fun. Here's one vote for 9 Verb interface and an alternative solution for those that don't like it. First of all let's get some things straight.

I don't care that it's dated, i don't care that many new P&C indie-devs have scaled it down to two or three options (great for them!). There's something magical about the 9 verb. Perhaps 'easy mode' could be with it and just right and left mouse clicks, since let's face it. The games gets easier with simplified interfaces, and most new p&c player are the 'oh i only want left and right mouse-click' type of people VS us oldschool players.

legit players(!) 40+ age that buys the games now (Warez'd them as kids ofc), but now that we can actually afford to buy them and support, we do! I even have the extras a cup and a t-shirt TP-Style! You should definately listen to me/us! We want the full experience with frustration included! The reminding system in RTMI was a very ambitious project and all the power to you Ron for doing it (we ended up never using it really). Put that energy into coming up with funny lines to strange solutions instead!

PS. Have a fast skip on the elevator this time!! DS.
Jamie Aug 05, 2026
So happy to see this as is my daughter. We had a great experience together with Thimbleweed Park. Very excited. Glad I'm early this time around as I will be wanting to buy all the things, in particualr the soundtrack on vinyl! Hope you also do another pressing of TP!!! The soundtrack in my house gets a daily listen! Thanks Ron!
Shred Aug 05, 2026
Can you do a Kickstarter for the add-ons maybe? Like other languages, more Ransom curses, or an option to crack or chop the top off a breakfast egg.
Azrapse Aug 05, 2026
Ron, remember that we will need an option for the side toilet paper hangs.
The game will be literally unplayable otherwise!
If you don't add it, at least add an option to censor-pixellate the toilet paper rolls if they hang "the wrong way". :D
Jonny Aug 05, 2026
I guess it's time to play through the first park another time
Ron Gilbert Aug 05, 2026
Azrapse: we will need an option for the side toilet paper hangs
It's in the design. Fear not.
Dark Aug 05, 2026
I cry so hard I never kickstarted the first game. I wake up in a daymare screaming and moaning. I rip at my Ransome the clown underwear as i weep. It eats away at me long through the day poking and prodding me into insanity. I was too young and broke I groan, trying to assemble some sense of relief from the constant constipation within my mind, where begging for a mental Pepto Bismol™. That being another opportunity to kickstart another Thimbleweed Park IP. If you could ever look inside and feel even an ounce of my anguish, please allow me the relief I need. I wait rocking back and fourth like a newborn babe for your response.

-Sincerely Yours, Dark
Joe Aug 06, 2026
Three words I never planned to type in my life: "Another hamster cameo?"
Javier Chame Aug 06, 2026
Woah! after you broke the 4th wall and basically gave ThimbleWeed park a "100 years of Solitude" type of ending I'm extremely curious on how this amazing saga will continue. Although you DID revive Monkey Island after telling us in MI2 it was just the imagination of two kids playing.

I sent you an e-mail Ron, please read it. I'm selling some fine leather jackets that might interest you
Zak Phoenix McKracken™ Aug 06, 2026
The development team members are spread across the globe, both above and below the equator. So, in the upcoming weekly podcasts, asking "what's the weather like?" becomes a much more interesting question...
Whup the Mighty Aug 06, 2026
This is the best gaming news I've read in ages!

The art, writing, music, puzzles etc for Thimbleweed Park fit together perfectly - getting as much of the gang back together as possible and going again just brings a massive smile to my face.

The podcasts were something I looked forward to every week - but I'd still really enjoy them if they were once a fortnight or monthly etc.
Mads Aug 06, 2026
In my excitement for this, I replayed the first one again, for the first time in a handful of years, and gee, I'm glad that that whole plotline about a wealthy industrialist becoming obsessed with AI, firing most of his workforce, ignoring issues that eventually lead to someone's death, and just generally becoming completely dependent on it for decision-making even in personal relationships hasn't unintentionally developed an eerie resonance with reality in the last 9 years.

Anyway. Completely separate from that, I actually think I appreciated the game even more than the first two times I've played it. I'm amazed at how much the character endings - particularly Reyes' and Franklin/Delores' - still resonate emotionally despite the surrounding circumstances. Also I think I might never have noticed that the Edmund Mansion is accessible at the very end, because I didn't remember Edna being there and it majorly jumpscared me!

As for potential crowd-funded goodies, a big-box edition sounds amazing, but frankly, I'd just love a physical disc in any packaging. Bonus if there was an option to include the first game as well. With the whole state of games right now, there's just a comfort in physical ownership (plus the joy of having stuff look neat on shelves). But I realize there are a lot of logistical considerations and a certain volume of purchases needed for the numbers to add up.

I'm just happy you're still enjoying making adventure games, and wanted to also say that Return to Monkey Island is possibly my favorite in that series, and I first played Monkey Island 2 with my dad before I even really spoke English. I can't wait to see what Thimbleweed Park 2 ends up being.
KineticEcho Aug 06, 2026
Yay!Fun things!
Niels Aug 06, 2026
Cool! I was really confused about the toilet paper option in the first game, until I read somewhere what it meant. If you pull something like that again, consider placing an option like that in a place where it's clear that the option does not mean anything.
Largo la Grande Aug 06, 2026
Dear Mr. Gilbert,

can we the fans send you money to apear in the game (phone book, NPC, you name it) as it was in kickstarter for thimbleweed park 1?

Yours truly,
Largo
Scabb Island

PS: thank you for Monkey Island!!!!!!!!

I loved TP1, I loved the dark night atmosphere, the humor, the graphics, the voice acting, the puzzles, the elevator, the fan exposition…

100th comment?
It’s almost been seven days since the first post, so counting down the hours while waiting excitedly (and refreshing every so often) for the second post!
Eivind Aug 07, 2026
What a way to end the week, discovering this fantastic news! I believe Thimbleweed Park was the first point and click I played with my son as his English was just good enough at the time to play the game (we are living in Norway). We had such a good dad/son moments playing that game, and I can assure you we will play the sequal together too (he is 19 now)!
Turbo Aug 07, 2026
I'd love to play it on my 21" CRT, 4:3 support would be great. Since TWP1 was supported by ScummVM, which is a great tool for playing it on CRTs, it would be nice if TWP2 also used compatible technologies (emulated by ScummVM). Thanks!!!!
Captain Loogie Aug 07, 2026
I'm happy with the colors on the dev blog 👍🏼
Flaky Geoffrey Aug 07, 2026
Ron, I think I speak for the vast majority of us when I say: please, have full access to my bank accounts and take from them what you will.

Now, as for the colour (yes, I'm writing from the UK) of the dev log. I'd like to suggest using the palette of the Thimbleweed Park diner. During my first playthrough, I spent a huge amount of time there enjoying the ambience, and not just because I was stuck and thought the location had more to offer in the way of solving puzzles. It's warm, inviting, familiar, but also spooky.
Jan Aug 07, 2026
Hi, I can't wait, thanks for making it. I would love to play the game on my Android phone, like the first one, please consider mobile as well.
Alex Aug 07, 2026
Can't tell you how happy I am you're doing another dev blog. The first one was a major source of inspiration getting into coding and game design. Looking forward to this!
Francesco Favia Aug 08, 2026
I was probably the first one to understand you were working on a new Monkey Island( as per my new conversation on Thimbleweed park blog) but I never thought you started during the Dolores mini gam, wow.
Stefan S Aug 09, 2026
Dear Ron, I'm with your Games since c64 Maniac Mansion. Im loving thimbleweed park so much. I own the collectors box and most of the merch. unfortunately I missed to be in the games phonebook. Hopefully I will make it in the second phonebook. Thanks for all your Passions you brought to your games, which stays solid in my gaming life ( also my kids love the games). 😉👍🏻
Ron Gilbert Aug 09, 2026

I doubt we'll do another phonebook, but will probably do something fun like it.

A true blessing, may the horrors that gnaw at me retreat with haste. You have saved me from my eternal torment, let your kindness never cease, let your mind ever grow, and let your passion flourish within us all. My joy knows no bounds, certainly you sir have succeeded in curing me of my ills. May you be blessed in return. Amen.

This is something i havent even dreamed of, so its amazing news. The first Thimbleweed is an excellent game, i wait nothing but more of the same quality. As a big fan of the original Maniac Mansion game (played it a LOT on C64) i love this graphical style you used on Thimble1.
And did i read right, this time we get back to Edison Mansion ?!?! Cant wait, thanks a lot for this. Miracles do happen! Keep going fellows!

Oh wow, I remember my dad showing me Thimbleweedpark back in 2017 and I was hooked from the beginning. Some day when reading about the game, I noticed that the creator of Monkey Island was working on it, which made me even happier because back in the days me and my dad were playing Monkey Island together on his old PC, so, naturally, Thimbleweedpark became a nostalgy thing for me. I constantly kept googling and reading if there are any sequels planned, and waited, and waited, and hoped and now i check out the Steam Page and see "Thembleweedpark 2"... wow, I can't wait for it.
